U.S. Rejects Any 'Truce' With Bin Laden

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rejecting a suggestion by Osama bin Laden of a negotiated truce in the war on terror, Vice President Dick Cheney said there was only one way to deal with terrorists. "I think you have to destroy them," Cheney said.

In the American Revolution, we were terrorists to the British. They brought terror to us. They quartered troops in our homes, made us feed them. All while they used force, guns, to maintain control of a legally established colony in North America. In the end, the war on terror proved too costly for the Redcoats. In the end, we made peace. They didn't destroy us. We didn't destroy them. Civilized men in civilized times made a civil choice. They chose peace.
Fast forward to the War of the Nations, also known as World War I. In the end, we signed the Armistice, and peace was restored.
Fast forward to the Great Patriotic War, or World War II. We used nuclear weapons for the first and last time in history. Again, bloody battles fought in trenches and now in the skies cost millions of lives. This was all pretty much because WWI (above) was not yet over for some, but in the end, we signed our treaties with the rest of the world. Peace was restored yet again.
Do I really think Osama is going to end the war in Iraq? I wonder, as some thinking people do, how much control he actually has over Al Quaeda and other such armies these days. I wonder if maybe he's not already dead (greatly exaggerated, but still a possibility). His latest communication, however, offered a truce. Yitzhak Rabin told us that we don't make peace with our friends. We make peace with our enemies. With all this blustering and cock-waving on the part of the Bush administration talking about having to "destroy them" is well and good, because they need to put that front forward in order to keep our troops happy, validate the Iraqi provisional government, but I hope there are some kind of secret (informal) feelers going out to him. If he's ready to talk, maybe his people will be ready to listen.
Otherwise, Cheney, and everyone like him, is simply a war pig. A foolhardy fanatic loving death and destruction over peace and freedom. Hillary (retch) is right, history will judge them harshly. But right now, peace is being sold at bargain basement prices. All we need to do is listen, and not dismiss the monster's remarks out of hand. Maybe he's ready to talk.
